Omollo reveals secret to Rangers' storming start

Posta Rangers coach Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo has stated that his side is benefiting from the excellent preseason preparation that they engaged in.

Omollo, who took over the coaching duties from former Kenya international and Harambee Stars coach Zedekiah Otieno in January, told kpl.co.ke that his team engaged in a very rigorous training regimen in January, and the fruits are there to be seen.

Rangers only lost the helm of the Premier League table to Gor Mahia on Wednesday on goal difference after setting up a frenetic early pace. Tellingly, Rangers are the only unbeaten team in the league this season after 10 round of matches and also boast of the meanest defense that has let in a measly three goals thus far.

“When many were still marking time due to the uncertainties concerning the commencement of the 2017 season, we used that time to train harder and build our intensity. In fact, the players did double work because we could train both in the morning and in the afternoon, keeping our focus on what we would do when the league started.

“We worked on our combinations as well as the different strategies we would use during the season. I think that plan has worked because we’ve managed good results; you can see that,” he said.

Asked whether he is now eyeing the 2017 silverware, the modest Omollo said that November was still a long way off.

“A team does not win the title after five or six games, or 10. You need to be consistent throughout the season. If we finish this first half of the season in the top spot we will again have to think about the second leg. We are talking about 34 matches. That is a long way away.

“We also haven’t played any of the big teams yet, so it may be too early to start making permutations. When we have played a team like AFC Leopards or Gor Mahia or Tusker or Ulinzi Stars we shall be in a better position to discuss this matter,” the former Tusker and Gor tactician said.

Rangers next play Nakumatt on Sunday at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
