Wednesday fixtures

Three matches are on the cards on Wednesday; AFC Leopards against Mathare United, Ulinzi Stars versus Thika United, and the pick of them all, the clash between Sofapaka and table leaders Gor Mahia.

Mathare United v AFC Leopards (Moi International Sports Centre, 3pm)

Buoyed by their progress to the final of the GOtv Shield, AFC Leopards will head into this match brimming with confidence.

Alex Kitenge has emerged as Ingwe’s most consistent striker following the departure of Gilbert Fiamenyo, and is the man to watch in the blue and white stripe.

Mathare’s Cliff Nyakeya, Victor Ashinga and Andrew Juma, who have endured lengthy absences from action due to injuries, have been passed fit to play.

Mathare will count on Chrispinus Oduor and John Mwangi for their goal hunt.

The two teams played to a barren draw in their first leg match.

Ulinzi Stars v Thika United (Afraha Stadium, 3pm)

Thika United will want to quickly get out of the relegation zone but getting all three points against the soldiers will be a rather tall order.

Ulinzi Stars beat Thika 3-2 their first leg match on May 7.

The soldiers’ lead striker and top scorer in the Premiership Stephen Waruru is undergoing a dry spell and has not netted agoal this second leg. He could come out at cylinders firing.

Thika’s Onwudi Chibueze remains sidelined by injury, and his coach Nicholas Muyoti will have to rely on the duo of Shami Kibwana and Eugene Mukangula.

Gor Mahia v Sofapaka (Moi Stadium, 4pm)

Following the removal of Zoo Kericho and Nakumatt from the league in line with a court directive, Gor Mahia’s lead at the top of the league table has reduced from nine to five points, and, you bet, they will be seeking to regain the big advantage.

Matches involving K’Ogalo and Sofapaka have always attracted wide interest, more since both teams have players of good quality on their side.

It will be another opportunity for Sofapaka’s red-hot striker Umaru Kasumba to chase down league top scorer Stephen Waruru who has 11 goals to his name thus far, one more than the productive Ugandan.

The 15-time champions will look to their on-form striking team of Jacques Tuyisenge, George “Blackberry” Odhiambo Medie Kagere and Timothy Otieno for the goals.

Sofapaka’s first choice goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya returns after missing the last four games.

Batoto ba Mungu won the first leg meeting 2-0 on June 18.
