SPL round 33: What they said

The penultimate round of games still could not decide the relegation tussle with all three sides facing the noose picking up crucial points to take the battle to the very final day of the season. What more could the purists of the league ask for? The coaches of course had plenty to say.

Western Stima coach Richard Makumi: “It is the best results of the season since it gives the team a chance to survive (beat Posta Rangers 1-0). We are determined to win all our remaining matches and stay in the league. We are motivated and ready to put everything on the line.”

AFC Leopards coach Robert Matano: “You will never see him (Kitenge) again in our matches (beat Chemelil Sugar 1-0). That boy has missed so many chances and that is a clear demonstration of lack of skill and intelligence. It is a pity we don’t have a depth in our squad, and we had to field him today, but if a striker wastes that number of chances, he is not worthy of wearing an AFC shirt. I am very disappointed with his performance today.”

Kariobangi Sharks coach William Muluya: “We would like to finish it in a style regardless of who we face last (beat Nzoia Sugar 4-1). Nakumatt is a very good side and being the last match, it can go either way but the boys are in good spirits now, two big-scoring wins on the trot is awesome before we see off the season.”

Ulinzi Stars coach Benjamin Nyangweso: “The referee not only deprived us of two genuine goals in the first half but she also did not gave us a clear penalty in the second half (lost 1-0 to Bandari).”

Bandari coach Paul Nkata: “At last my boys managed to make the home fans return home happy for winning this game especially against such a good and accomplished team as Ulinzi (beat Ulinzi Stars 1-0)”

Posta Rangers coach Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo: “The game was tough, we had our chances but playing away to a relegation threatened team was going to be a daunting task (lost 1-0 to Western Stima). We still have a match to play and we are working hard to pick all the three points to finish the season on a high.”

Chemelil Sugar coach Juma Abdalla: “Our team is really struggling due to lack of funds (lost 1-0 to AFC Leopards). The players have understood the company's challenges and they are playing with passion, only for wrong calls by the referee to mess us up.”

Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr: “The game was evenly balanced (beat Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0). It is a pity that Homeboyz had to play a man down. That red card was really unnecessary because it wasn’t an intentional; foul on (Harun) Shakava.”

Kakamega Homeboyz coach Mike Mururi: “This was a big game and the boys played very well lost 1-0 to Gor Mahia). I am satisfied with their output, despite the fact that they failed to convert a penalty. I understand the intrigues that go on in the players’ minds when they are playing a team like Gor Mahia so for today I will forgive their lack of sharpness in front of goal. In fact, I believe they deserve praise for holding strongly in the second half when we had to play one man less (after Wycliffe Ochomo was sent off).”

Tusker assistant coach Francis Baraza: “We were just unlucky in this game (lost 1-0 to Sofapaka). I think we played very well, I can’t blame the boys. They created a number of chances but I think Sofapaka wanted a win more than we did. When they scored one goal they defended very well and it was impossible for us to make a comeback especially in the muddy pitch.”

Sofapaka assistant coach John Baraza: “We really struggled last season but this season everyone will agree that we have exceeded expectation (beat Tusker 1-0). This is due to nothing but hard work from the boys and the technical bench too. We prepared well for this match and managed to collect all the points on offer. But we are not done yet. We are still chasing second position which is now ours to lose.”

Sony coach Salim Babu: “I blame today’s loss on poor officiating, and the rains(lost 1-0 to Nakumatt). The pitch was soaked and unplayable, making it very hard for us to execute our game plan.”
