Veteran Okwemba leads Sofapaka past Stima

Sofapaka sounded a warning they just may be a team to be reckoned with this season when they crushed Western Stima 3-1 at Moi Stadium, Kisumu as Kakamega Homeboyz edged out Muhoroni Youth 1-0 in Mumias in Sunday's SportPesa Premier League matches.

Much-travelled veteran Charles Okwemba, prominent in this match, scored the opening goal for Sofapaka midway through the first half before Humphrey Okoti doubled that lead five minutes to the break.

Fredrick Nyarombo pulled a goal back for Stima minutes later as they looked to mount a comeback only for Ezekiel Okare’s strike to end the affair as a contest with Sofapaka’s third goal.

Stima goalkeeper Samuel Odhiambo was given his matching orders after handling the ball outside the box late on.

The emphatic win echoed Sofapaka coach Sam Ssimbwa’s warning earlier in the week that, despite being written off by most pundits, they will not be making the numbers in the 2017 league, but gunning for a podium finish.

And at Mumias Sugar Sports Complex, Kakamega Homeboyz silenced visiting Muhoroni Youth with a goal from their season's signing Wycliff Ochomo.

Ochomo, who left Muhoro Youth under circumstances that were anything but harmonious, drilled home a second half penalty for the only goal of the match as he got back – from his point of view – at his former employer.

Benjamin Masha came close for Muhoroni in a frantic second half but just lacked that extra bit of accuracy.
