SportPesa Premier League All Stars face Spain’s Cordoba in Malaga

SportPesa Premier League All Stars will on Wednesday evening face Spanish second division side Cordoba Club de Fútbol at the Estadio el Mauli in Antequera City, Spain starting from10pm Kenyan time.

Cordoba feature in the Segunda Division, officially known as La Liga 2. They finished 10th last season.

They were promoted to La Liga for the 2014-2015 season but could only manage a 20th placed finish and were consequently relegated back to the Segunda Division.

Another game for the Kenyan select side has been scheduled for Friday evening at the Estadio Municipal Jose Burgos Quintana in Coin City against Sevilla Atlético

The tour is the first of many programmes lined up under a recently signed partnership between La Liga and Kenyan Premier League.

Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi, who is handling the All Stars team, has hailed KPL for making the initiative possible, saying that the players stood to gain some valuable exposure and experience from the Spain tour. /

“The goal is to bring these players together and equip them with the necessary experience that will help them in future engagements such as CHAN (African Nations Championships).

“Winning would be nice, but the bigger objective is to help these players gain exposure and experience that will help them in future engagements. Most of them are below 23 years, which means they are the future of the national team,” Okumbi said.

The 18-man squad currently in Spain was drawn from SPL sides with an eye on the Kenya team for the African Nations Championship next year.

On Tuesday, Kenyan football officials attended a sports marketing seminar at the La Liga headquarters in Madrid that will be held over two days. They were expected to join the Kenyan select squad on Wednesday evening ahead of the two games.

The partnership, to last three years, between KPL limited and Spanish top flight organizers La Liga was formalized on May 11 this year.

No money was involved in the deal, but La Liga officials explained that their vision is to improve the general management of the KPL as well as its clubs so that they can be more professional and profitable.
