Vihiga can’t wait to taste SportPesa Premiership action

Barely days after securing promotion to the 2017 SportPesa Premier League, Vihiga United are already on high gear preparing for the new season.

Club assistant coach Francis Xavier told that the team’s technical bench has already switched from National Super League mode to top flight football mode and are now preparing a strategy that will see them make a major impact in Kenya’s top club football competition.

“First of all I want to thank my players. Getting here wasn’t easy, our last match against Ushuru was particularly tough – we needed to win or perish – and we showed character and prevailed,” Xavier said.

“Our supporters and the club management have also been with us through thick and thin and I thank them for their unwavering support.

“Now that we are in the Premier League, we need to tweak a few things in order to perform well. That involves making a few good signings and coming up with suitable styles of play because we shall be meeting opponents who are more experienced than us.”

Vihiga gained promotion into the top flight on Saturday after beating Ushuru 1-0 to finish at the top of the NSL table with 80 points from 36 matches.

They were promoted automatically alongside University of Nairobi side Wazito who finished second with equal points but an inferior goal difference.

Vihiga United, a team of the Vihiga County Government, have had a brilliant 2017 season were they lost only four of their 36 games league games.

They also reached the semi-finals of the GOtv Shield after trouncing 2016 champion Tusker 2-0, but were knocked out 2-0 by AFC Leopards.

Coached by former Ingwe duo head coach Edward Manoah and assistant Xavier, Vihiga boasts a team made up of several Kenyan Premier League experienced players including veteran Charles Okwemba, Martin Imbalambala and Barnabas Tiema, all of who have previously featured for Ingwe.

It will be interesting to see what signing Vi higawill make in the off season transfer market.
