2017 GOtv Shield: 11 SPL sides chase pre-quarters berths

Eleven SportPesa Premier League teams will look to progress deeper into the GOtv Shield competition when the round of 32 matches are staged over the weekend.

Defending champions Tusker face an unpredictable tie against Palos in Meru, while former champions Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will play Bandari and Nairobi Stima in Thika and Mumias respectively.

The brewers dispatched lower tier side SS Assad 5-0 in the first round. But they succumbed to a shock 1-0 defeat to Bandari in their league match last weekend, which saw them relinquish their position at the top of the SPL log, and will need to bounce back quickly.

Palos on the other hand are placed seventh on the National Super League table having won five of their 15 matches so far. They are under highly experienced coach Hesbon Nyabinge.

Speaking to kpl.co.ke on Friday, Nyabinge said that he has trained his sights on a quarter-final place in competition and they will go into the match against the brewers without feeling intimidated.

“We have a league match on Wednesday but Sunday’s match is also of great importance. We obviously have to split the squad accordingly and the best players will obviously play against Tusker,” the former national junior team assistant coach said.

Tusker coach George Nsimbe is also taking no chances saying the stakes are too high to gamble with a weakened team.

“We cannot let this title slip away so we shall put a squad that is capable of nothing but victory,” he said.

Nsimbe will however miss the services of winger Noah Wafula who is attending trials at Moroccan top flight side Ittihad Riadhi de Tange.

In other matches, 2014 champions Sofapaka will be up against fellow top league side Bandari in Thika, as Ulinzi Stars and Sony Sugar face off at the Afraha Stadium.

Winners will pocket Sh2 million in prize money and also earn a ticket to next Confederation Cup.
