SPL round 17 preview

The second tranche of SportPesa Premier League games to be aired live by Bamba TV are on this weekend. Many eyes will also be on AFC Leopards and Robert Matano as they seek a revival. After three weeks out of league action, Gor Mahia are back with new Dylan Kerr in line to taste his first competitive action in the local scene.

Sony Sugar vs Bandari (Awendo Green Stadiums, 3pm)

Following the departure of Ugandan Dan Sserunkuma, a young but highly dedicated and productive striker has emerged from Bandari in the name of Cosmas Lewis, who has so scored three goals in almost as many matches for the dockers. Watch out for him.

These two teams exchanged 1-0 victories last season and in 2015.

Sofapaka vs Muhoroni Youth (Nyayo Stadium, 2pm)

Sofapaka suffered a 3-1 defeat just a week ago at the hands of Kariobangi Sharks in the GOtv Shield and will want to bounce back strongly against a decidedly struggling Muhoroni side.

Muhoroni Youth won the first leg clash 1-0 with Batoto ba Mungu gaining ample revenge 2-1 in the second leg.

AFC Leopards vs Western Stima (Nyayo Stadium, 4.15pm)

The reentry of Robert Matano has brought with it good tidings for the long suffering AFC Leopards fans, as they have now enjoyed two consecutive victories after snapping a 10-match winless run.

Ingwe, however, face a Western Stima side that beat them three times last season, including a comprehensive 3-0 thrashing in the GOtv Shield.

Five-goal club top scorer Gilbert Fiamenyo remains sidelined by injury but Keziron Kizito and Alex Okaka continue to prove every day that they are worthy cover.

Chemelil Sugar vs Thika United (Chemelil Sports Complex, 3pm)

Thika United have recorded six consecutive draws and could easily slip to bottom spot if they fail to collect points against Chemelil.

Chemelil succumbed to a shock 2-0 loss to Zoo Kericho two weeks ago, and coach Nicholas Muyoti will need to employ a suitable tactic in order to outwit the highly defensive Thika.

Goalkeeper Jairus Adira and defender James Agembe are suspended for this match for having collected a red card and accumulating five yellow cards respectively.

Last season, Thika United beat Chemelil Sugar home and away with identical 1-0 scores.

Kakamega Homeboyz vs Mathare United (Mumias Sports Complex, 3pm)

It is on the backdrop of a painful ouster from the GOtv Shield by lower tier side Vihiga United that Homeboyz approach this match.

They face a Mathare United side terribly low on confidence after managing just two victories in 16 games.

While Homeboyz have a full squad to choose from including famous – or is it infamous - striker Wycliffe Ochomo, Mathare will miss the services of goalkeeper Levis Opiyo suspended after seeing red in their previous match against Sony Sugar.

Mathare United has never beaten Homeboyz at this level. Their last four encounter have ended in two draws and two victories for Homeboyz.

Ulinzi Stars vs Nzoia Sugar (Afraha Stadium, 3pm)

Ulinzi Stars assumed the league leadership a fortnight ago for the first time this season and will be riding high on confidence.

And they have in their side league’s most prolific striker in the name of Stephen Waruru who has so far scored 10 goals.

The last time these two teams met was in September last year where the soldiers eliminated Nzoia from the GOtv Shield on post-match penalties following a 1-1 score at the end of regular time.

Kariobangi Sharks vs Zoo Kericho (Nyayo Stadium, 2pm)

Newbies Kariobangi sharks are enjoying a 10-match unbeaten run in the league.

They will face their old foes, with whom they won the battle of promotion into the premier league last season.

Ovella Ochieng and Masoud Juma are back in the Sharks’ fold from a tour of Spain with the SportPesa All Stars, and should add more firepower to the side that also the useful Paul Kamau and Masoud Juma.

Zoo’s lead attackers Mike Madoya and Nicholas Kuipuirui will be keen to strut their stuff on live television.

Gor Mahia vs Nakumatt (Nyayo Stadium, 4.15pm)

This will be Dylan Kerr’s first league game in charge of Gor Mahia, a game he must win if he is to inspire confidence among the club’s demanding supporters.

Gor’s burly midfielder Ernest Wendo is struggling with a groin injury and is likely to be replaced by Philemon Otieno who put up an impressive show in their game against English Premier League side Everton three weeks ago.

Nakumatt’s Kepha Aswani is the league’s second top scorer with six goals thus far and will certainly relish a go at the league’s fifth meanest defense.

K’Ogalo will be looking to reclaim first position on the log with a win.

Tusker vs Posta Rangers (Kinoru Stadium, 3pm)

Tusker, after a firm start, have stuttered terrible, losing back-to-back matches and winless in their last three matches.

Tusker captain James Situma is suspended from this match for having accumulated five yellow cards.

Posta Rangers defender Luke Ochieng and goalkeeper Patrick Matasi will also miss this match for the red cards they collected in their previous match against Nzoia Sugar.

Rangers won the first leg 1-0 and Tusker the return match 2-1 last season.
