Kasumba: I can win Golden Boot

Sofapaka in form Ugandan striker Umaru Kasumba has now set his sights on clinching the 2017 SportPesa Premier League Golden Boot.

The rising Sofapaka hit man, who has now scored six goals in almost as many matches to place him seventh on the SPL top scorers’ charts, wants to follow in the footsteps of compatriot former Gor Mahia and Bandari striker Dan Sserunkuma who won the Golden Boot Award in 2014 to become the first Ugandan in the league’s history to win the top scorers’ gong.

“I can do it. I came here to score goals and I have done it a couple of times now. I know my capabilities and if I am given consistent play time, I know I can score many more goals in the coming games. It’s only a matter of time before I catch up with him Waruru,” he told kpl.co.ke.

Ulinzi’s top striker Stephen Waruru leads the top scorers’ list with 11 goals to his name, followed by Crispine Oduor (Mathare United) and Kepha Aswani (Nakumatt), both on eight goals apiece.

Kasumba could be on to something. The red-hot striker has managed six goals for Batoto ba Mungu in his last five games, that is an average of just over one goal a match.

Kasumba, who joined Sofapaka in June from Uganda’s AS Villa, has therefore placed a precise target of at least 10 more goals in the remaining SPL games to get top honours as he hopes everything goes well for him in as far as the performance of his rivals are concerned.

“What I need is play time, which I am already getting here at Sofapaka. I believe I can score a goal a match in the next two months,” he said.

The Ugandan was speaking on Monday at a Sofapaka ceremony in Nairobi honouring him and defender Rodgers Aloro as the club’s most influential players for the month of August.

Veteran forward Hillary Echesa emerged runners’ up in the inaugural club award.

Kasumba and Aloro were rewarded with Sh30,000 each, and Echesa Sh20,000.

The monthly awards were introduced by the club two months ago.
