Vihiga, Wazito gain promotion to SportPesa Premier League

Vihigi United and Wazito gained promotion to the Kenyan Premier League after finishing in position one and two respectively in the National Super League that ended on Saturday.

Vihiga pipped league leaders prior to the day’s action Ushuru 1-0 to finish top of the 19-team table on 80 points.

The all-important goal of the match came via the strike of Bernard Ochieng to send the Vihiga County side through to top flight football next season.

Wazito, who started the day in third position and needed to win handsomely to secure a promotion spot, did exactly that with a thumping 5-2 victory over Police at Narok County Stadium.

The win pushed Wazito’s point tally to 80, same as Vihiga, but with an inferior goal difference, but enough to secure them second position in the league.

Dennis Gicharu, Kevin Ouma, Zachary Gathu scored a goal each while Kennedy Ayako grabbed a brace to seal the comfortable win for the University of Nairobi side. Kevin Ouma , David Oluoch were Police’s goal scorers.

Ushuru, who looked destined to return to the SPL after a year out, just needed to avoid defeat on this day but ended up the biggest losers as their Premiership prospects went up in smoke in the small Western Kenya town.
