2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup: Libya hold Kenya

African Nations Championship-bound guest side Libya held hosts Kenya to a frustrating draw in their Group “A” match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Tuesday.

With an expectant crowd at the stands Kenya went on the attack right away with SportPesa Premier League top scorer Kariobangi Sharks’ Masoud Juma leading the search for goals, Gor Mahia’s George “Blackberry” Odhiambo is wingman.

They both had a sniff at goal but just could not make the decisive strike against a determined Libya side.

Kenya coach Paul Put introduced forwards Kepha Aswani of Nakumatt, Sharks Ovellah Ochieng and AFC Leopards’ Vincent Oburu as he looked for the breakthrough that never came.

In an earlier Group “A” matches, Zanzibar swatted Rwanda’s Amavubi – the Bees 3-1 at Kenyatta Stadium.

Yahya Mudathir opened the scoring for Zanzibar before Issa Juma and Kassim Suleiman secured victory for the islanders after Hakizimana Muhadijir had equalized for Rwanda.

Kenya lead the group with four points from two matches followed by Zanzibar on three points and Libya with two points.

In Group “B”, Ethiopia opened their campaign in emphatic fashion blanking South Sudan 3-0. Abel Tilahun scored a brace and Abubejer Abdela once to seal the fate of Cecafa’s newest member.
